Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the SWSPCP

DEI Statement

Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification Program Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
At the SWSPCP, wetland science and practice is our passion, and we know that wetlands are incredibly diverse and that each wetland scientist is as unique as each wetland. We endeavor to place diversity, equity, and inclusion at the core of who we are and what we do and to take action to ensure that our certificants and leadership reflect the diversity of wetland scientists and practitioners across the globe. Our approach will be based on being open, transparent, collaborative, and inclusive.

We recognize diversity to be the representation of various identities and differences in our program which broadly include, among other dimensions, race, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, religion, economic status, country of origin and citizenship, ethnic background, disability, education, career stage, and professional status.

We plan to take proactive steps to:

  • Build Diversity among our certificants and leadership;
  • Provide Equal opportunity and equal access to certification, such as considering geographical or financial status; and
  • Ensure Inclusivity to certificants and leaders in actively participating in the certification program and serving as certified wetland scientists.
By aligning our policies, practices, and resources to promote diversity and accessibility, we are focused on identifying and removing barriers to recruitment among our certificants and leadership. Our DEI committee will work to develop guidance to increase outreach and develop strategies to reach under-represented groups. We are committed to fostering a culture where wetland scientists from all backgrounds feel valued, heard, and respected and have genuine opportunities to learn and grow.
