COURSE INFO PROVIDER: SWSPCP Webinar
COURSE TITLE: Scientists' Second Warning to Humanity and a Declaration on the Rights of Wetlands

INSTRUCTORS Gillian T. Davies

COURSE DESCRIPTION Gillian Davies Abstract:

In 2018, a group of SWS wetland scientists and a climate scientist published a response (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13157-018-1064-z) to the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice (http://scientistswarning.forestry.oregonstate.edu/sites/sw/files/Ripple_et_al.%20_7-31-7_scientists_warning.pdf), which identified specific steps, relevant to wetlands, that can be taken to transition from our current trajectory of continued global loss and degradation of wetlands, continued destabilization of the global climate, ongoing land use change, and accelerating biodiversity losses, towards a more sustainable future. Following discussions at the SWS Ramsar Section symposium at the 2019 Baltimore SWS Annual Meeting, a group of SWS wetland scientists and a climate scientist are developing a further response to the Scientists' Second Warning and to the growing rights of nature movement by developing a Declaration on the Rights of Wetlands. This webinar will inform listeners about these evolving efforts to change our trajectory and meet with greater success in responding to wetland loss and degradation, a changing climate, and other global threats.

Gillian Davies Bio:

Changing Wetlands. Since the 2015 Annual Meeting, she has been collaborating with other wetland scientists and a climate scientist as part of the informal SWS climate initiative, including presenting on the Scientists' Second Warning to Humanity and a Declaration on the Rights of Wetlands in the Ramsar Section symposium at the 2019 SWS Annual Meeting in Baltimore. Gillian was a contributing author to the Massachusetts Climate Change Adaptation Report (2011) and has spoken on wetlands and climate change in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Taiwan, and China.

Gillian has a Master of Environmental Studies degree with a concentration in ecosystem ecology from the Yale School of Environmental Studies, and a bachelor's degree from Williams College.
