COURSE INFO PROVIDER: SWSPCP Webinar
COURSE TITLE: Aquatic Birds Monitoring, Wetland Conservation, and Citizen Science in Chile

INSTRUCTORS Dr. Heraldo V. Norambuena Ramirez

COURSE DESCRIPTION Abstract:
Waterbirds have been key species to support criteria and decisions in wetland conservation and management. Their wide distribution, biological cycles strongly associated with water, abundant populations, and easy detection, allow them to be useful as indicators of environmental quality. They have also been important in bringing people closer to the natural world, through bird watching, this has generated a broad participation of volunteers in waterbird monitoring tasks. In this talk, it will be presented how aquatic bird censuses have favored the development of a network of observers who have supported multiple instances of wetland conservation and improved knowledge of this group of birds. This, added to digital tools such as eBird, have allowed the generation of projects as the Chilean shorebird atlas and the Chilean breeding bird atlas, the first of its kind in South America. These experiences have allowed the identification and designation of wetlands of international importance (RAMSAR), natural sanctuaries and, in addition, support plans and strategies for bird conservation.

Bio:
Dr. Heraldo V. Norambuena Ramrez is Chilean and has worked with birds for 13 years. He obtained his undergraduate degree of Biologist in Natural Resource Management (2011; Universidad Cat³lica de Temuco) and later a PhD in Systematics and Biodiversity (2018; Universidad de Concepci³n). Between 2012-2017 he was the coordinator of the Chilean waterbirds census (led by Wetlands International), and in 2014 he coordinated the Chilean shorebird censuses, which led him to travel throughout the entire country collecting information on birds. He is co-author of the Chilean Shorebirds Atlas (2017) and co-editor of the Breeding birds Atlas of Chile (2018). His research has produced more than 25 scientific articles, 4 book chapters, and 2 books. Currently, he is the editor-in-chief of the divulgation journal âLa Chiricocaâ and is developing a postdoctoral project in the Department of Zoology at the University of Concepci³n on systematics and evolution of Procellariiformes birds. In addition, he is executive director of the Center for Agricultural and Environmental Studies (CEA) and researcher of the Chilean Birders Network (ROC).
