COURSE INFO PROVIDER: SWSPCP Webinar
COURSE TITLE: Wetland Mapping and Emerging Technology

INSTRUCTORS Jodie Murray Burns
Darren Mitchell

COURSE DESCRIPTION The workshop will present different current technologies and demonstrate various equipment used in mapping wetlands and other environmental features. Information will be useful for students, wetland delineation practitioners, and natural resource managers. The workshop will include a ½ day class session, followed by a ½ day field session, during which participants will be able to practice using the technologies presented in the workshop. Lunch, drinks, and snacks provided. Use of a personal smartphone required for trial access to mapping apps for use in the field portion and use of a personal laptop computer required to access the online portion of the mapping apps/software during the lecture portion.

The field session will utilize the Harding University Gilliam Biological Research Station (HUGBRS) where attendees will have the opportunity to use several different mapping technologies and participate in mapping exercises. Shared transportation (carpooling) from the Harding University campus to the field site will be encouraged and lunch, drinks, and snacks will be provided. Attendees must wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the field session. This workshop is appropriate for students, practitioners, and natural resource managers of all levels of experience. Credit Points: 0.53

SYLLABUS/TOPICAL OUTLINE Technology and mapping equipment are changing the way natural resource data is collected in the field. Workshop participants will receive demonstrations and engage in hands-on activities to learn about a selection of new technologies during ½ day classroom and ½ day field sessions. Specific workshop topics will include various types of mapping equipment and apps; a demonstration and trial access to BioApp; a demonstration and trial access to ECOBOT; a demonstration of the Corps of Engineersâ developed Automated Data Sheets. Classroom time will be reserved for discussion and Q/A. The field session will entail the use of a personal iOS/android device to utilize two current digitized wetland delineation data collection forms (ECOBOT and BioApp). Demonstration and hands-on use of several types of submeter GNSS receivers will also be conducted in the field session. Additionally, ArcGIS field applications will be used to conduct field investigations to locate sites and assets, access system information, collect field data and provide real-time information.
