COURSE DESCRIPTION When Times Get Tough Remember The Sea Turtles!

ABSTRACT:
The San Jose Island Barge Removal and Restoration project is full of regulatory decisions, agency consultation, and remote location challenges. Join Christine Magers, CWB and Adam Constantin, PWS as they present the permitting and restoration of temporarily impacted dune and wetland barrier island habitat. The project began in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey made landfall near the island causing six barges to break loose from the mooring area in the Lydia Ann Channel. The high winds and waters carried the barges over the island towards the Gulf where they landed on the back side of the dunes in two different areas, five barges in one area and one lone barge in another. A team of marine vessel salvagers, barge owners, land owners, habitat restoration experts, coastal engineers, and environmental scientists joined together to permit, plan, remove, restore, and monitor the project. You won’t want to miss this, the project has everything – helicopters, sea turtles, more barges, and cows!

Christine Magers’ BIO:
Christine Magers, CWB, is the Environmental Program Lead for Balcones Field Services (Balcones). After a fantastic career with HDR, she joined the Balcones team last year and is excited about the opportunities to further advance the environmental regulatory services field that her new role will offer her. She also serves as an elected board member of the National Association of Environmental Professionals to contribute to technical excellence in the field. Besides her children, of course, she’s most proud of her successful grant application award to repair sea turtle tanks for the Amos Rehabilitation Keep in Port Aransas. She continues to patrol for sea turtle nests and attend rehabilitated and hatchling sea turtle releases as often as possible. Recently she’s been volunteering and giving with the 100 Women of the Coastal Bend to support local non-profit organizations.

Adam Constantin’s BIO:
Adam is a GIS Analyst based out of HDR’s Lafayette, Louisiana office. Adam has over 10 years of experience working with GIS data solutions, primarily on environmental related projects. Adam is a professional wetland scientist and a FAA certified drone pilot. He has experience conducting environmental analyses at local, landscape, and regional scales, with a focus on the northern Gulf of Mexico. He has worked on numerous permitting projects in the transportation and energy sectors. Adam enjoys using his technical skills to lower barriers for others to access, analyze, and interpret data. In his free time, Adam enjoys live music, anything that allows him to work with his hands, and spending time with his family.
